Use of Main Controls
Accelerator: Smooth progressive control, faults include lack of control and fierce use

Clutch: Smooth progressive control, safety at low speeds and junctions, faults include lack of control and fierce use

Gears: Faults include unneccessary gear changes, driving to slowly, coasting between gear changes, incorrect gear selection and looking at the gear lever.

Footbrake: Faults include unneccessary gear changes, driving to slowly, coasting between gear changes, incorrect gear selection and looking at the gear lever.

Handbrake: Apply if waiting for 2 seconds or more. Do not apply if creeping or move off is imminent.

Steering
Both hands must be on the steering wheel at all times except when changing gears, operating hands controls and reversing. Faults include, striking the kerb, inaccurate steering whilst looking at controls or unnecessarily long mirror checks, both hands off (wheel spin), swinging wide into the path of other traffic, and overshooting the point of turn at right turns.

Moving Off
Move off smoothly and safely, including at an angle and on gradients, taking full account of other vehicles and road users, including blind spot checks.

Emergency Stop
Quickly and under full control, both hands on steering wheel, clutch down when vehicle about to stop. Faults include lack of control, inability to respond quickly, skidding or swerving.

Reversing into a road on the left
Must maintain control of the vehicle, full observation and correct response to proximity of other road users, emphasis on straightness and accuracy of steering in the new road not finishing close to the kerb.

Turn into a Road
Demonstrate proper control of the vehicle and awareness of other road users as well as obstructions such as lamp posts. Give priority to traffic flow on the road but without waiting in a potetntially dangerous position or ignoring traffic waiting for the candidate to complete the manoeuvre.

Parking in Reverse Gear
Conducted behind one car, between two cars or in a bay at the beginning, during or end of the test.

Effective Use of Mirrors
Use mirrors frequently and well before signalling, stopping, slowing down or changing direction. Candidates should be able to assess the speed, distance, position, and actions of following traffic and respond to the situation. Superficial mirror checks are inadequate for the test.

Use of Signals
Use signals to warn or inform other road users of an intended action. Signals should be given in good time for others to repond. Signals do not make unsafe manoeuvres safe. Test candidates are advised to give arm signals when appropriate on the approach to pedestrian crossings. Faults may be recorded for:

  • Giving incorrect, late, misleading signals
  • Omitting neccessary signals
  • Failing to cancel a signal after use
  • Failing to reactivate a prematurely mechanically cancelled signal
  • Giving invitation signals to pedestrians to cross the road
